David Schreiber, CFP®

Certified Financial Planner™

Professional Focus and Services

David Schreiber is a Certified Financial Planner ™ practitioner and a registered representative of Financial West Group, a member of its Progressive Asset Management Group division. He came to Progressive Asset Management Group in early 2006 after working as an independent registered representative of the American General Securities division of AIG starting in 2001. He holds FINRA licenses series 6, 7, 63 and 66 as required of an investment advisor's representative. He also holds licenses in Massachusetts and New Hampshire for all forms of life, disability, catastrophic care, long-term care, health insurance and related products.

David has led an interesting and varied career. Trained as a concert violinist/violist he has worked variously as a musician and teacher, an industrial chemist, high school chemistry teacher, farm hand, soldier and financial planner. A native of New York City, David is a graduate of New York's famous LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and the Performing Arts (the school on which the show and movie "Fame" was based). He went on to pursue a chemistry course of study at the College of the City of New York, worked briefly as an industrial chemist and then completed his Bachelor's Degree in Music at Bennington College. After a year of teaching music in the Bennington, Vt. public school system David won a scholarship for further study at the New England Conservatory of Music, receiving a Graduate Diploma in performance 2 years later. For the next couple of decades David pursued a career as a performer of chamber and orchestral music appearing with such luminaries as Yoyo Ma and Lynn Chang (Fromm Foundation Concert Series, Harvard University, 1975) as well as the Haifa Symphony and Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra of Israel. He may still be seen and heard in concert around the Boston area although not as frequently as in former years. Several years ago David reinvented himself. Two ideas had come together. One: that many leaders of nonprofit organizations, especially in the arts, tend to think that they are not fulfilling their mission if they don't end the year in the red. The other: that, while American corporate capitalism has proven itself to be the greatest wealth generator the world has ever seen it is something of a headless, heartless monster. The first idea led him to begin the study of financial planning and explore its power for helping individuals and families as well as institutions. These same studies, especially of economics, investments, and markets also hinted at ways in which that headless monster might be directed in socially useful directions through the forces of the market, and this in turn led him to look for and find Progress Asset Management Group with its focus on socially screened investing.

Community Involvement

David's interest in issues of social justice has drawn him to active membership in the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization and the National Association of Socially Responsible Organizations focusing on the issue of health care accessibility. He was a member of the working group on the individual mandate of the ACT!! (Accessible Care Today) coalition which has been advising the Massachusetts Connector Board (created under the MA healthcare reform law) on the benefit structure, pricing and implementation of the new required health insurance products. He is a founder and former communications director of the NonProfit Net, a Lexington, MA based organization uniting the nonprofit organizations of the community for greater visibility, mutual support and networking. He is also a member of the finance committee of his temple, Shir Tikvah in Winchester, MA.
